Degrowth Community Outreach Booth

This page showcases our degrowth outreach booth in hopes other groups can build their own to share with their local community and spread awareness of degrowth practices. All asset files are available on our downloads page and everything was made at home by hand. Reactions have been almost universally positive and we've generated lots of conversations with festival-goers.

Bean Bag Toss

The bean bag toss draws people in because it's a) large and visible and b) a game. The white strips on the leader board are magnetic and each winner's name is ranked on a magnetic post-it stuck there.

The targets behind the leader board are arranged as follows: Easy actions to achieve are closer to the starting line (making them easier to score on) and the more impactful actions are worth more points. So, for example, eating less beef is easy and impactful, so it's worth a lot of points and closer in.

QR Code Sculptures

These little statues illustrate some concept of degrowth and pair with a link to more info on our website. This gives passersby something interesting to look at so they're not presented with a wall of text. The rabbit and turtle sock crafts are in the craft section of this website, and the statues were made of poly clay.

Overview posters

While degrowth is obviously a big concept with lots of fascinating literature, we wanted to distill the overall concept down to a short enough read that a passerby could realistically read it.

Meat impact display

We had three containers that represented the impact of producing 4oz of chicken, pork, and beef if it were converted into it's equivalent in coal. The bucket with the blue cover representing beef weighed nearly 40lbs, as opposed to the bag representing chicken - which only weighed 2lbs. Lifting these in your actual hands really drives the difference in.
